Trailing for most of the game, Eli Manning proved the hero for New York as the quarterback engineered a 12-play, 83-yard drive late in the fourth quarter before hitting wide receiver Plaxico Burress in the end zone with just 35 seconds left.Manning's heroics denied the Patriots' bid to become just the second team to complete a perfect season with a Super Bowl championship and match the 1972 Miami Dolphins. The winning touchdown came just over two minutes after Tom Brady had seemingly secured a fourth title in seven years for New England when the quarterback tossed a six-yard scoring pass to Randy Moss to give the Patriots a 14-10 lead with 2:42 left. But it was more than enough time for Manning, who marched the Giants 83 yards in just 2:07 to avenge a 38-35 loss to New England at the end of the regular season.
Manning kept the drive alive with an incredible play when he escaped the grasp of two defenders and lofted a 32-yard pass to David Tyree, who made a sensational leaping catch by pressing the ball against his helmet as he tumbled to the ground at the 24-yard line with 1:15 remaining.
Four plays later Manning floated a pass to Burress in the left corner of the end zone for the winning score and seal an unlikely triumph for the resilient Giants.
